RIYADH: Apparently some teachers here subscribe to the philosophy of “do as I say, not as I do.” According to yesterday’s Al-Watan newspaper, the General Administration for Girls’ Education found that 78 teachers and education supervisors (all of them women) were behaving inappropriately at their jobs. Punishments included written warnings to pay deductions and transfers. The report cited some of the egregious behaviors. One headmistress called a subordinate a “cross eyed insect” while another teacher sarcastically and angrily asked a group of colleagues to “shave off my mustache.” Some behaviors went beyond such insults. One supervisor not only told teachers that they were “living in debauchery” with their scandals “everywhere on the Internet,” but also threw a pen in the face of one educator. Authorities said enough was enough and sent a message to area schools that such behavior would not be tolerated.
