JEDDAH: Two-hundred and sixty-one exhibits contributed by children of grades 1 to 12 were showcased in an art show at Bangladesh International School’s (BISJ) English Section.
“Some of them were exquisite and show how children were getting oriented in art,” said Mohammad Kaisarul Islam, labor and welfare counselor at the Consulate General of Bangladesh, who opened the event as chief guest together with school Principal Ann Khoaz on Saturday.
“This is the first time we organized this mega level show,” said Feroza Rafeek, a specialist in art and design, who heads the art department of the school. She said contributions from among 368 children were chosen for display. The exhibits were being judged and winners will be given prizes.
“Some of the best pieces of art from this show will be sent in March to Shishu Academy’s international art exhibition. The academy will announce the winners and distribute prizes in May.”
Exhibits on display included paintings, pencil sketches, and clay, glass, pottery and puppetry paintings and designing. The art themes included flowers, countryside life, animals and green environment.
The principal said the school with 920 children had been adding new courses in its curriculum, the latest being food and nutrition. “Aside from girls, boys have been showing interest in this,” she added.
The school, which opened in 1993, has a well-equipped kitchen where children are taught to prepare healthy food and healthy eating. Extra coaching for weak students, two labs for information technology and two libraries are among the special features of the school, whose International General Certificate of Secondary Education (IGCSE) results have been “exemplary.” said M.M. Talukder, acting chairman and head of finance of the school’s five-member governing board. Its students are also fairing well in sports including cricket.
