JEDDAH: A week of events to celebrate the French language around the world was launched in the Kingdom on Sunday with a reception at the French Embassy in Riyadh followed by one last night at the Consulate General in Jeddah. The “Week of the Francophonie” is taking place all over the world.
Francophonie is a Paris-based organization that brings together the world’s French-speaking countries or those where French plays a significant role. The 56 members include several Arab states, among them Morocco, Tunisia, Egypt and Lebanon.
The “week” in Saudi Arabia in fact lasts a fortnight, and includes exhibitions, concerts and events not only at the French Embassy and Consulate General but also at the Canadian, Senegalese, Egyptian and Lebanese embassies as well as French School in the capital and at the Moroccan, Egyptian, Lebanese and Algerian consulates general as well as the Lycée Française in Jeddah.
