GAZA CITY: Israeli forces attacked a group of Palestinian fighters along the Gaza-Israel border early yesterday, killing two of them and wounding three others in one of the worst flare-ups of violence since Israel ended its offensive in the territory more than two months ago.
Troops spotted four fighters “planting explosive devices” along the fence, and an Israeli soldier was wounded in an ensuing gunbattle, the Israeli military said. The troops called in an airstrike and struck the armed men, the military said.
Palestinian witnesses reported hearing two explosions from the border area in the central Gaza Strip, after which Israeli helicopters hovered over the fence and fired at targets. Medical crews evacuated the bodies of two Palestinian men in military uniforms from the border, according to Dr. Moaiya Hassanain of Gaza’s Health Ministry.
