DUBAI: A driver with a security company who stole 6.2 million dirhams he had been given to transport to a bank has been arrested by police. Investigators arrested the man, a Pakistani national, within 24 hours of the crime being committed.
The driver, Omran Hafidh, was entrusted the cash along with two colleagues to drop off at a bank in the Naif area of Dubai on Sunday morning. According to a police statement, Hafidh waited for his colleagues to get out of the van before driving off. Realizing what was happening, the colleagues immediately called their superiors who alerted police.
By that time, Hafidh had reached Al-Qusais area where he had left a car he rented from a Dubai car-rental firm. He then moved the cash from the van into the car and drove to Sharjah, where he abandoned the vehicle near a hotel.
Police were able to track Hafidh to an apartment in Sharjah where he was arrested along with an accomplice, Amir Riyad, also a Pakistani national. Officers were able to retrieve the stolen cash.
During interrogation, the men said they had been planning the crime for three months. The men said they intended to lie low for a couple of months until police stopped searching for them and then quietly transfer home the cash in small amounts and smuggle themselves out of the country.
