JEDDAH: There are often reports of students beating up their teachers but a local newspaper in the Kingdom reported a peculiar incident in which the school director in the presence of his colleagues beat up a teacher. Chemistry teacher Abdullah Al-Shamrani in Aqeeq, 70 km east of the southern resort city of Baha, was the victim. He said the incident took place when he went to the director’s office to sign in the attendance register. According to press reports, the director started the quarrel by shouting at the teacher and beating him with his iqal (Saudi headband). One paper said the director had earlier attacked another teacher. An investigation has been launched.

JEDDAH: A group of youth in Al-Jouf adopted a novel but legal method to destroy music cassettes and videos. They collected donations from people who want to be anonymous, and purchased the cassette shops after negotiations. They took all audio and videocassettes as well as CDs and DVDs in a truck and set fire to them along the road to grab public attention. The youth said they would open a showroom for Islamic cassettes at the shop they bought.
