DAMMAM: Over 228,250 cars carrying 540,343 passengers crossed the King Fahd Causeway between the Kingdom and Bahrain during the spring holidays that ended on May 1, said a statement issued by the General Organization for the King Fahd Causeway.
“On Thursday alone, 70,500 passengers traveled via the causeway. During the remaining days of the vacation, their number was between 44,000 and 66,000,” the statement said. “In anticipation of the vacation rush, the organization posted additional staff at the gates of the causeway.”
The statement said 7.92 million vehicles (a daily average of 21,685) traveled on the causeway last year, registering a 10 percent growth compared to the previous year when the total number of vehicles that used the 28-km facility stood at 7.19 million.
In the same year, 6.74 million Saudi-registered cars — accounting for 83 percent of the total vehicles that crossed the bridge in the year — traveled across the bridge. While the number of cars with Bahraini registrations was 1.02 million, 313,874 cars carried other registration plates.
The statement put the total number of vehicles using the bridge since its official opening in November 1986 until Dec. 31, 2008, at 70.78 million (a daily average of 8,773). According to an earlier report, about 550,000 trucks used the causeway last year.
