ARAR: Prince Abdullah bin Musaed, governor of Northern Border Province, ordered the release of a Yemeni woman who had been in jail for 40 days after her husband wrongfully accused her of kidnapping their daughter, according to a report in yesterday’s Al-Jazirah newspaper.
The saga began when the woman divorced her Saudi husband of five years in Arar, the capital of the province.
The woman won custody of the girl in a Shariah court.
Later, the woman filed a case demanding that her ex-husband pay child support for their daughter. The father countered this by filing a criminal complaint against his ex-wife for allegedly kidnapping his daughter.
The woman was detained in a civil department in Riyadh and then sent to a jail in Arar. The woman then petitioned to the provincial governor for help in her situation.
The governor later ordered the woman freed and her daughter returned to her.
The woman is now pursuing legal action against her ex-husband on the charge of tash’hir, an Islamic form of defamation, based on his false accusation that she was a kidnapper. She is also seeking compensation for the time she spent in jail.
The report did not reveal the names of the man and woman involved in the case.
