MANAMA: The Bahraini Coast Guard is searching for a fisherman who went missing after a boat carrying five men capsized in Qatari waters on Friday night.
“The fishermen’s boat was found capsized,” said Bahrain Coast Guard Commander Brig. Alaa Siyadi.
“Several sorties were conducted (to search for the fisherman) and a team of divers are continuing the search,” he said.
The other four men were found and detained for illegally straying into Qatari waters.
Siyadi said a Bahraini-Qatari team would continue to search for the missing seaman.Family members of the missing man have headed to Qatar where they hope to learn the fisherman’s fate.
Bahraini fishermen have been calling upon Qatari authorities to grant them permission to fish in Qatari waters. They claim they were severely affected after Bahrain and Qatar resolved their dispute over the Hawar islands.
In April, the Qatari Coast Guard detained four Bahraini fishermen for illegally fishing in Qatari waters. They were later released after paying fines.
