JEDDAH: Malaysian expatriates in Saudi Arabia joined their counterparts at home and elsewhere in the world to celebrate their National Day which marked the 46th birthday of Mizan Zainal Abidin, the 13th Yang di-Pertuan Agong, or king, of Malaysia.

Consul General Hidayat Abdul Hamid held a reception at the consulate, which was attended by officials, businessmen and members of the community. Malaysia’s first astronaut Sheikh Muszaphar Shukor was the chief guest.

In his address, the consul general said Malaysia enjoyed a good relationship with Saudi Arabia in trade, investment and tourism.

Shukor said since his space adventure, a number of Malaysians were evincing interest in science and math to be able to undertake space journeys.

“I am happy that my young countrymen are taking interest in space science. I will be very happy if I am able to change the minds of our younger generation.” he said.
