JEDDAH: Recent police raids across a number of neighborhoods in east Jeddah resulted in the arrest of more than 1,265 overstayers, including 23 people wanted in connection with various criminal activities.
Police were also able to track down and arrest a gang of Arab expatriates who were breaking into homes and robbing people at gunpoint.
Among those arrested was an Asian worker who forged residence permits for cash from illegal residents.
According to police, the recent raids focused on suspicious venues that had been under surveillance.
Police surrounded the areas prior to the raids and established checkpoints to prevent overstayers and criminals from escaping.
A police source said the purpose of the raids was to arrest overstayers and curb criminal activities in areas heavily populated with expatriates.
