SRINAGAR: Curfew continued in Jammu and Kashmir’s Baramulla town for the second day and restrictions were extended to other places in the valley yesterday, a day after two protesters were killed in clashes with police following an allegation by a woman that she had been harassed by cops.
The row that had triggered widespread protests Monday led to restrictions also being imposed in Sopore town and parts of the summer capital Srinagar.
Baramulla town plunged deeper into violence yesterday as angry mobs defied curfew restrictions, resulting in injuries to 15 persons including a teenager who was hit in the head by a police bullet.
A 13-year old boy Bilal Ahmad Bhat was critically wounded after security forces opened fire near the Baramulla bridge late in the morning.
Life in other parts of Kashmir valley was crippled yesterday in response to a shutdown call given by the hard-line separatist All Parties Hurriyat Conference and rocked by sporadic violent protests against the Baramulla killings.
In Bandipora town, further north of Sopore, six people were hurt in clashes with police during a violent anti-India protest, police said. The hard-line faction of the Hurriyat Conference headed by Syed Ali Geelani has also called for a three-day valley-wide shutdown against the Baramulla incident and the delay in identifying the culprits involved in the murder and rape of two women in Shopian town whose bodies were found May 30.
