MAKKAH: An on duty nurse at King Abdul Aziz Hospital in Makkah was shot dead early Friday morning by an unidentified gunman inside the hospital, said Maj. Abdul Mohsen Al-Maiman, spokesman for Makkah police.

The incident caused havoc among hospital employees, patients and visitors. Al-Maiman said the attack took place at 1:30 a.m. The gunman fled the scene, but security officers arrested him within a few hours and seized a machine gun from his car.

Arab News learned that the victim was a 30-year-old man whose wife gave birth last week.

“We have launched an investigation into the incident,” Al-Maiman said, adding that the gunman, who appears to be in mid-20s, is believed to be suffering from mental problems.
