As American citizens are left high and dry in these times of fiscal difficulties, and multimillion dollar bailouts of companies hit headlines, one of the largest foreign recipients of US aid (a bailout for want of a better word) goes to a foreign country, Israel, via a process that most Americans know little about let alone challenge.
Billions of dollars in US military aid is given to Israel annually. In August 2007, the US and Israel signed a memorandum of understanding committing the former to giving the latter $30 billion in military aid over the next decade. In fact, since 1949, the US has given Israel $101 billion in total aid, of which $53 billion has been military aid. Unlike the monetary help Egypt receives, US aid to Israel does not need to be repaid.
It therefore makes one wonder why Israel — in spite of being an industrial and technologically sophisticated country — receives more US aid per capita annually than the total annual per capita of several Arab states. Around one third of the US aid budget goes to Israel, even though Israel comprises just one thousandth of the world’s population and has one of the world’s higher per capita incomes.
