JEDDAH: Three suspects were arrested Monday morning on charges of running a scheme to rob taxi drivers, according to police in the southern Al-Nuzlah district. The three included a Saudi couple (a man and a woman) and one Yemeni national.
Police responded to a cab driver’s call claiming he was robbed after picking up a Saudi woman who made a phone call to signal her accomplices. In a remote area, the Saudi and Yemeni men cut off the cab driver in their vehicle. When the driver got out to argue with the men, the Saudi woman snatched the driver’s mobile phone. “The drivers acted as distraction to keep him away from his car so that the woman can steal,” said Jeddah police spokesman Col. Misfar Al-Juaid. “They tricked the taxi driver by starting an argument.”
The driver managed to jot down the details of the vehicle’s license plate. Police managed to track down the previous owner of the vehicle who then directed the authorities to whom he had sold the truck, who turned out to be one of the men allegedly involved in this crime.
Police urge citizens to report every crime that occurs. “It is everyone’s duty to report thefts,” said Al-Juaid. Theft victims can call 999 to receive assistance from authorities.
