THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Congress party-led United Democratic Front (UDF) swept 19 of the 26 seats in the by-elections to the civic bodies held on Thursday.

Extending its winning streak of the recent parliamentary elections that saw the UDF winning hands down, the alliance wrested seven seats from the ruling Left Democratic Front (LDF) led by the Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M).

The Bharatiya Janata Party, which is yet to open its account in the Assembly and Parliament from Kerala also wrested a seat from the LDF, the lone seat that the party could manage.
