AMMAN: Twenty Jordanian lawmakers have submitted a proposal to the lower house of Parliament for the “freeze” of the peace treaty, which Jordan concluded with Israel in 1994, parliamentary sources said on Monday.
The motion was in response to last week’s remarks by the Speaker of the Israeli Knesset Reuven Rivlin supportive of expanding Israel to include territories under the sovereignty of the Hashemite Kingdom.
According to the Israeli newspaper Yediot Aharonot, Rivlin had expressed backing for the idea formerly expressed by Ze’ev Jabotinsky, one of the founding fathers of the Zionist movement, for setting up Israel on both banks of River Jordan. “Jabotinsky’s vision is now valid more than any time ever in Israel’s history,” Rivlin was quoted as saying in reply to remarks by the Israeli President Shimon Peres, who reportedly contended that Jabotinsky was “mistaken” in this respect.
