JEDDAH: Police arrested two Yemenis on charges they were stealing mobile phones in downtown Jeddah, Al-Madinah daily reported on Thursday. According to the report, the modus operandi of the duo was to approach people offering to sell them ring tones and when a customer revealed an expensive phone, one man would snatch the phone and the two would run in different directions. After several complaints, police set up a sting operation in the area where the crimes were reported to have taken place.

JEDDAH: Jeddah police arrested a man after he fired on them as they were closing in on his clandestine distillery in a luxury villa in north Jeddah. An unreported number of accomplices were also detained. Lt. Col. Suleiman Al-Mutawwae, acting spokesman of Jeddah police, said in a statement that a Saudi man in his 30s was arrested after police and members of the Commission for the Promotion of Virtue and Prevention of Vice entered his villa. The man fired on the authorities, but the gunman was overcome.

JEDDAH: In a week-long combing operation in Jeddah, police discovered 5,441 violations and arrested hundreds of people involved in violations, Al-Madinah daily reported on Thursday, quoting police spokesman Col. Misfar Al-Juaid. Suspects included 23 men involved in serious crimes and 62 men driving cars under suspicious circumstances. They also caught 345 beggars, including 241 women and 90 children, and 45 street vendors of both genders.
