JEDDAH: The municipality said in an announcement on Tuesday that 310 abandoned vehicles were towed off city streets as part of efforts to remove the decaying eyesores.
“This is within efforts to keep Jeddah a clean city with a modern look,” the municipality said in a press release.
Abandoned vehicles have been a common sight on the streets of Jeddah. These discarded cars are stripped over time by scavengers until they are covered with dust, broken into and filled with garbage.
Abdul Aziz ibn Abdullah Al-Ghamdi, who is in charge of municipal waste issues, said police have been instructed to place stickers on cars that appear to have been recently abandoned and wait 10 days before towing the vehicles. This includes vehicles that appear to have been in the same parking spots for long periods of time. The cars will be described and photographed by the officers before being towed. The vehicles will then be impounded and held for three months before auction.
“The owner of the car will be fined SR500, of which SR200 will be paid to the municipality,” he said.
An amount of SR200 will be given to the towing company and SR100 will go to the police.
