SRINAGAR: Jammu and Kashmir government on Wednesday announced a Central Bureau of Investigation probe into the rape and murder of two young women in south Kashmir’s Shopian town.
Making the announcement on the floor of the in-session state Assembly, the Finance Minister, Abdul Rahim Rather, however, said the government would seek state’s high court permission for it as the matter was sub judice.
State assembly witnessed uproarious scenes on Wednesday morning following press reports: “The key forensic evidence in the rape and murder of the two young women had been tampered with.”
The reports said that the vaginal swabs of 17-year old Asiya Jan and her 22-year old sister-in-law Neelofar Jan did not match with the samples from the victim’s blood and viscera.
The reports also said the swabs belonged to some other women.
The reports further said “There is a possibility the swabs were fudged to shield the four police officers under detention here and charged for destruction of evidence and dereliction of duty.”
The opposition peoples Democratic Party (PDP) members were on their feet this morning in the state assembly in the backdrop of press reports.
The PDP members were joined by other members of the house in demanding a probe into the matter.
The state finance minister had, however, pacified the members saying the Chief Minister Omar Abdullah would make a statement on the issue in the afternoon.
However, the chief minister did not turn up to make the statement.
Interestingly no statement was, however, made and only an announcement regarding the probe by India's premier investigating agency was made by the finance minister.
