JEDDAH: Makkah Gov. Prince Khaled Al-Faisal has set up a committee to find a solution for the problem of overstayers in the province within a week. He has called for the activation of all existing regulations including fines and punishments against those who violate iqama rules. As many as 156,000 overstayers have been deported this year.
Man shoots self at stoplight
ARAR: A mentally ill man in his 30s tried to commit suicide by shooting himself in the chest inside his car late on Saturday at a stoplight, the daily Al-Riyadh reported on Sunday. The man stopped his car at a traffic signal and shot himself. Drivers nearby alerted the police who came to the location. Ambulance transferred the man to the Arar Central Hospital where he was reported to be in serious condition.
Man arrested for children torture
JEDDAH: Baha police held a young Saudi man working in the local Health Affairs Department on charges he abused his brothers by burning them with lit cigarettes. Baha police spokesman Maj. Saeed Al-Ghamdi told Arab News that the mother of the two children noticed the signs of torture on their bodies and alerted police. The ages of the victims and the perpetrator were not provided.
Distillery near Jeddah busted
JEDDAH: The Commission for the Promotion of Virtue and Prevention of Vice in Dahban, 45 km north of Jeddah, raided a liquor distillery managed and controlled by Asians. Liquor worth over half a million riyals was confiscated. The drink was destroyed and people arrested were taken into police custody for investigation.
