MANAMA: With the most liberal telecom laws in place, Bahrain has managed to attract major global telecom players to invest in this sector including the Saudi Telecommunications Company (STC), a top official at Bahrain’s telecom regulatory body said.

“We have auctioned the third mobile license to STC Telecom Company worth $240 million. In addition, STC will invest $100 million on infrastructure development,” said Mohammed Ahmed Al-Amer, chairman of Bahrain’s Telecommunications Regulatory Authority (TRA).

“Bahrain has emerged as one of the most open and competitive markets in the telecom sector in the region, thanks to the most liberalized and leveled playing field for all telecom players,” said Al-Amer.

“STC is working on deploying its network to be able to launch by the end of 2009 or early 2010, and with the launch of a third mobile operator services the end consumer will get more competitive rates and good services,” he added.
