TRIPOLI: Freed Lockerbie bomber Abdel Basset Al-Megrahi received a 150-strong African delegation in a Libyan hospital on Wednesday, his first public appearance since his admission with terminal cancer. Al-Megrahi, who was controversially granted early release on Aug. 20 by Scottish authorities on compassionate grounds, coughed repeatedly as he gave a 10-minute reception to the visiting African MPs. Seated on a wheelchair, the 57-year-old, who has been diagnosed with incurable prostate cancer, looked very ill. He was admitted to hospital in the capital Tripoli earlier this month less than a fortnight after his homecoming.
