RIYADH: A pair of Saudi conjoined twins was successfully separated at King Abdul Aziz Medical City here Friday by a team of doctors led by Health Minister Dr. Abdullah Al-Rabeeah.
The operation was carried out on the instruction of Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Abdullah. This is the 25th operation carried out by experts at the hospital to separate Siamese twins.
In a statement on the occasion, Al-Rabeeah congratulated King Abdullah, the team of doctors and surgeons and the twins’ parents on the success of the operation.
It was one of the rare operations carried out by the hospital’s team of doctors as the twins were aged just three weeks and joined in their chest.
“The operation took about two hours,” the minister said, adding that the twins would stay in intensive care unit for one day.
They will be later shifted to the nursery where they will stay for another three days. After that they can go home, Al-Rabeeah said.
Dr. Bandar Al-Qanawi, executive director of health affairs of the National Guard, which runs King Abdul Aziz Medical City, said the operation was carried out after conducting necessary tests during the past five days.
