JEDDAH: While most regard the summer vacation as a chance to relax and have fun, some youths see it as a golden opportunity to earn an extra buck and gain experience in the work field.
“I prefer to work during the summer because I feel I spend my time more productively, and I help my family too,” said Ibrahim Sheadle. “I have worked various jobs in my summer vacations, I’m also saving money to get married.”
Mousa Hamid Muhammad is using the summer time to earn money for his university expenses and help out his family.
“The summer vacation is my chance to help out my family financially, also save up for my personal expenses,” he said.
Muhammad Jamal, who works at his father’s aluminum company, said he wants to gain experience and take some of the load off his father.
“I work to gain experience and help my father so that he can take some time off in the summer, because he works a lot,” said Jamal. Feras Al-Ghamdi drives a taxi during his summer vacation.
“I only drive the taxi during summer vacation because it’s tourist season. People come to Jeddah from Riyadh and all over the Kingdom. It’s a chance to make a decent amount of money. Even after I graduate I plan to drive my taxi in the summer because there’s good money in it.”
Even teens are using the summer to earn money and gain experience. Hatim Abdullah, 14, works in his father’s shoe shop assisting customers.
“I like to come to work with dad and help him and learn about the business,” he said. “I will be running the business when I complete my education.”
