JEDDAH: With the recent opening of a number of flyovers and public parks, Jeddah is determined to become a beautiful and an advanced city. According to Mayor Adel Fakieh, more than SR5 billion has been committed to the construction of bridges, tunnels, road crossings and parks so far.
“The future plan of the city is to become a beautiful haven for the coming generations and ensure its more than three million residents a high quality living,” Fakieh said.
“The city plans to attract more people for education, tourism, work, residence and entertainment in an atmosphere of exuberance and security.”
Fakieh said the city, being a crossroads between the holy cities of Makkah and Madinah, has a great responsibility toward the Muslim world.
“It remains the focal point for pilgrims and visitors to Islam’s two most sacred mosques,” he added.
According to the mayor, Jeddah will also become an international commercial center characterized by dynamism and flexibility.
“Jeddah has a diversified economic base and deep-rooted trade traditions that will make it a unique international trade and tourist center. The city is determined to achieve and maintain its sustainable development,” he said.
The undersecretary of the municipality for construction and projects, Ibrahim Kutubkhana, said 18 road crossings costing more than SR1 billion were currently under implementation in addition to 35 new crossings at the design stage at a cost of about SR3 billion.
“We will construct more bridges and public parks for the welfare of the residents,” the official added.
Kutubkhana said when all the planned tunnels, bridges and crossings were completed, the city, which now has more than a million vehicles making more than six million daily trips, would have a smooth traffic system free of congestions and bottlenecks.
Kutubkhana recalled that five new public parks were recently opened and said about 100 new parks would be established in as many weeks.
He said 30 parks would be established in various residential quarters. “We are planning to give a green look to our beautiful city and provide its residents with recreational places to go to,” he said.
