RIYADH: Saudi Arabia has donated $1 million to the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) to help civilians caught in the conflict in northern Yemen.
“This significant contribution from the Saudi government comes in response to the emergency appeal issued by the UNHCR late last month for $5 million to aid Yemenis fleeing the escalating fighting,” said Mamoon Muhsen, UNHCR spokesman and external relations director.
Muhsen said the Saudi government also agreed to allow, in coordination with the Yemeni government, relief to be distributed to internally displaced Yemenis in the areas bordering the Kingdom.
These urgently needed funds, he said, would allow the UNHCR to organize the management of refugee camps, expand registration and protection of the displaced people and improve their living conditions in the next four months.
The spokesman said the Kingdom approved the UNHCR’s request for a cross-border emergency operation to expedite the delivery of urgently needed assistance to refugees located in areas adjacent to the Saudi border.
