JEDDAH: Second Deputy Premier and Interior Minister Prince Naif called for a three-day forum on domestic abuse, which is scheduled to begin on Monday at the Jeddah Chamber of Commerce and Industry.
Jeddah Gov. Prince Mishaal on behalf of Prince Khalid Al-Faisal, governor of Makkah province, and a number of university professors and specialists will attend the forum.
The general manager of the Social Affairs Department in Makkah province, Ali Al-Hinaki, held a press conference on Saturday at the department saying the head of the Interior Ministry would like to see similar forums across the Kingdom.
Al-Hinaki also said that the 17 committees that are specialized in family protection would be bolstered around the Kingdom to meet population growth.
The social affairs manager also said that they would seek through this forum to promote a program that would highlight domestic violence cases. He also added that there are no specific statistics about the number of domestic violence cases in the Kingdom, but estimated that the number of cases does not exceed 650.
Al-Hinaki spoke about a new judicial bylaw system that is being studied and would be implemented to punish whoever commits domestic abuse.
Education departments and the media are also ordered to participate in combating domestic violence through awareness campaigns.
