JEDDAH: The first editor in chief of a new newspaper to be published in the Eastern Province believes there is no need for a publication that is unable to make fresh contributions to the Saudi print industry.
Qinan Al-Ghamdi, who previously held the reigns of Al-Bilad and Al-Watan before being appointed to Asharq by Minister of Culture and Information Abdul Aziz Khoja, assumed the role on Monday.
Speaking to Arab News, he said he hopes the new newspaper would be a qualitative addition to Saudi media. He added that the print industry would continue for a long time despite fierce competition from electronic media.
“Many newspapers nowadays are publishing in print and online to ensure their continuity,” he added.
The newspaper editor gave no fixed time when the new newspaper will see the light in Dammam. He was, however, hopeful that it would not be long.
He denied that his newspaper would be in competition with Al-Yaum newspaper, the Eastern Province’s number one newspaper. He, however, said Asharq would be a high-quality regional newspaper.
