JEDDAH: The scientific committee of the family violence forum concluded its meeting at Jeddah Chamber of Commerce and Industry (JCCI) and called for the establishment of more centers to accommodate and take care of family victims in the Kingdom.
The meeting also urged activation of the Supreme Council for Family and strengthen the role of civil society establishments in receiving family violence victims. It also sought to activate the law that prevents marriage of minors. The forum emphasized the need to enlighten the public on the negative effects of family violence on the members of the family and society.
The participants wanted to make use of international experience in tackling family violence issues through exchange of information and field visits. They said that the Health Ministry should be urged to open specialized centers for mental and medical treatment to victims.
The forum urged the Ministry of Islamic Affairs, imams and dawa centers to enlighten the public on the harmful effects of family violence and how to deal with wives and children nicely.
Dr. Abdullah Al-Muetani, chairman of the forum's scientific committee and president of Human Rights Commission in the Makkah province, said the meeting called for the establishment of social protection centers in all provinces of the country, especially in most populated areas.
He emphasized the importance of preparing a comprehensive strategy to deal with family violence, after allocating adequate funds for the purpose. Experts discussed 22 research papers on various aspects of family violence during the meeting.
