JEDDAH: King Abdulaziz University (KAU) in Jeddah announced it would establish the first center of excellence for breast cancer in the region.
The center will operate under the supervision of Dr. Samia Al-Amoudi, member of the Saudi Cancer Society and a breast cancer survivor.
Saudi businessman Mohammed Hussein Al-Amoudi donated SR15 million to help create the center.
“He is an economist who understands the true meaning of investment when he decided to become a philanthropist,” said Samia, who is not related to Mohammed Hussein.
The center will perform mammograms with modern technology and cooperate in research with specialized international research facilities in Geneva and the United States.
“The research will focus on cases of young women diagnosed with breast cancer,” said Samia Al-Amoudi.
“A strategy is being developed now to promote a culture of breast cancer awareness and early screening among specialists and workers in the medical sector.” The project is expected to be ready within the next year to serve the region.
KAU Hospital hosted a breast cancer awareness campaign in February 2008 organized by the Saudi Cancer Society, Susan G. Komen for the Cure, and the US State Department. The campaign took place in Riyadh, Jeddah, Qassim and Dammam.
