MUMBAI: Exit poll results have predicted a hung assembly in Maharashtra causing jitters in the Congress-Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) camp.
After an internal assessment, a major task now awaits the high command of the Congress — who will be the next chief minister.
A number of possible candidates have come to the fore including Ashok Chavan and Narayan Rane.
Observers have refused to hazard a guess on the next chief minister, although some of them feel the natural choice is incumbent Ashok Chavan.
Nearest competitor Rane has said that he would not be staking claim for the post. However, the Konkan strongman and former CM who headed the state during the Sena-BJP rule remains one of the major contenders.
Meanwhile, NCP supremo and federal agriculture minister Sharad Pawar said in his hometown of Baramati in Pune district his party would not claim for the chief minister’s post as Congress had contested more seats in the State. He also refuted any dispute between the two parties.
