JEDDAH: Hussein Al-Sharief, supervisor of the National Society for Human Rights (NSHR) in the Makkah province, said on Friday that he would this week inspect the condition of people living under bridges in Jeddah, including overstayers, in order to present reports to concerned authorities.
NSHR officials conducted a preliminary tour of bridges in Jeddah last week and found that a number of overstayers and mentally ill people living under them.
Al-Sharief and his officials will find out the reason why these people are living under bridges in order to take appropriate action.
He will ask government departments and embassies to intervene to solve the problems that these people face and take steps to deport them to their respective countries.
The society had earlier conducted a study on mentally deranged people living under Jeddah’s bridges and asked government departments to take care of them.
It had asked the Ministry of Social Affairs and Al-Amal Hospital to provide necessary treatment to mentally ill patients before they become a security threat. A number of charitable orgnizations currently support overstayers living under bridges.
