MAKKAH: More than 20,500 officials and workers will be used to implement Makkah municipality’s executive plan for Haj 2009, Makkah Mayor Osama Al-Bar said on Saturday.
He said the plan was devised taking into consideration the shortcomings in services of past Haj seasons. “It will be implemented with speed and utmost flexibility without any delay,” he said.
A large number of officers and workers will be mobilized to make the plan a success, he said, adding that it will include support staff from the Ministry of Municipal and Rural Affairs, public security and Mujahedeen forces. Students from universities and health institutes will also be hired to carry out the plan.
He said cleaning services would be carried out around the clock, especially in areas where a large number of pilgrims stay.
“Some 7,000 cleaning workers equipped with 620 pieces of equipment and vehicles will be deployed in Makkah at the holy sites.”
The municipality has prepared 131 garbage-dumping grounds in addition to 1,000 pressurized garbage containers. They can accommodate about 15,000 tons of waste or about 70 percent of waste produced during the Haj season.
The municipality’s Haj plan covers supervision and maintenance of tunnels, flyovers, roads, streetlights, flood-drainage networks and toilets.
