RIYADH: Majed Al-Ghamdi of Al-Faisal Racing Team won the 5th round of Bison MINI Cup Championship held on Zain Al-Reem International Circuit here over the weekend.
In the official qualifying stage, Al-Ghamdi achieved best time, which gave him the pole position, followed by Faisal Bin Laden, a talented driver. Bandar Alireza, the direct competitor of the championship, started from 4th position, which badly affected his result.
Al-Ghamdi stormed into the lead from the first lap recording the fastest time of 1.32.565 minutes and totally captured the first place leaving behind his rivals, Faisal Bin Laden and Prince Mohammed bin Fahed Al Saud, who emerged in the 2nd and 3rd places respectively. The Al-Reem Racing Team was disappointed as their leader Bandar Alireza had to leave the race due to the breakdown of his car.
“I expected to win,” Al-Ghamdi said, adding the final round will be more challenging. Bandar Alireza, who was not happy with the result, which was mainly due the breakdown of his car, said: “I haven’t lost my chance as yet. God willing, I’ll win the 6th round and the title. I’ve put in lot of efforts in this championship and I think I deserve to win.”
The championship has entered a critical juncture and the 6th and final round scheduled on Dec. 17 will determine the overall winner. The tournament, held under the supervision of Saudi Automobile Federation (SAF), has helped discover and rediscover many motorsport talents, a spokesman for the organizers - Pro Race, a company that specializes in car races, said.
Prince Bandar Al-Faisal, honorary president of Zain Al-Reem International Circuit, crowned the round winner in the presence of Mashaal bin Fahed Al-Sudairy, head of SAF.
