JEDDAH: The meat from 700,000 sheep and 10,000 cows and camels will be distributed to the poor in Makkah and in 24 countries across the world as part of the Saudi Project for the Utilization of Haj Meat.
The project, which has been managed by the Islamic Development Bank (IDB) since 1403 A.H,. distributes the meat of animals sacrificed during the Haj.
IDB President Ahmed Muhammad Ali said the project is designed to make the animal sacrifice ritual of Haj easy for pilgrims by providing animals that meet all Shariah and health requirements, while ensuring the environment around the holy sites remains clean.
Ali was speaking at a reception for journalists from Muslim countries who are currently in the Kingdom covering the Haj. He added that people can purchase coupons for sacrificial animals via the project’s website (www.adahi.org) using a credit card, or from Saudi Post, Al-Rajhi Bank, Al-Amoudi Foreign Exchange Bureaus, and the offices of the Al-Haj and Al-Muatamir Society in Makkah.
The IDB president also said that all animals are inspected by vets and Shariah scholars to ensure they meet requirements of health and Shariah. He added that the project was set up by Royal Decree 131 in 1988.
