JEDDAH: Canada’s Foreign Minister Lawrence Cannon has sent his condolences to Saudi Arabia following the deaths of 106 people during last Wednesday’s torrential rains in Jeddah.

“On behalf of all Canadians, I offer my condolences to the family members and friends of those who lost their lives,” said Cannon, who visited the Kingdom in mid-October. “I also extend my sympathies to all those who have been affected by the heavy rains and subsequent flooding.”

The Canadian Embassy in Riyadh said it is investigating whether any of its nationals died or were injured in the floods. According to the consulate general in Jeddah, there are some 5,000 residents in the city with Canadian nationality.
