JEDDAH: Following the disastrous floods on Nov. 25, the British International School of Jeddah (usually known as the Conti School) has set up an emergency relief appeal. The move was on the initiative of the students.
“We sent text messages to parents, letting them know last Wednesday,” said the school’s director, Bruce Gamwell. “We are looking mainly for dry clothing, bedding and similar items.”
The response of parents and children has been very encouraging, the school reports. On the first day back after the Eid vacation on Saturday, goods started to pour in. “One parent who is a manager for major local hotel has offered a large amount of towels and bed linen,” said Gamwell.
Parents have also organized transport to take goods to the emergency relief center set up at the International Exhibition Center on Madinah Road. The appeal is not limited to those connected with the school. “We would be delighted if those who do not have children at the school offered goods.”
The school has, however, shied away from accepting cash donations. “We would rather have donations in-kind,” the director said.
