JEDDAH: A three-story building in Jeddah’s historic area collapsed after catching fire on Tuesday.
“No one was injured or died. The building was uninhabited and was located near Al-Fishawi Coffee House opposite Al-Baya Square in the Balad district,” said Capt. Abdullah Al-Amri, spokesman for the Civil Defense.
“The Civil Defense evacuated a hotel and other homes close to the building. The fire was able to spread rapidly because the building’s frame was made from wood,” he added.
The government has allocated huge funds for the renovation and preservation of Jeddah’s historic districts and stressed the need to make buildings in these areas safe.
Ibrahim Al-Tasan, chief of Personal Affairs of Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques, said the renovation of Jeddah’s historic districts should go hand in hand with making buildings safe.
