OTTAWA: Alex Kovalev’s hat trick, including the 400th goal of his NHL career, helped the Ottawa Senators beat the Carolina Hurricanes 4-2 on Saturday.
With the score tied 2-2 late in the third, Kovalev took a shot on an Ottawa power play that deflected off the skate of Hurricanes defenseman Jay Harrison and past Manny Legace for goal No. 400. Kovalev added an empty-net goal in the final minute.
Jason Spezza also scored for the Senators. Ray Whitney scored twice for the Hurricanes, and Legace stopped 33 shots.
Red Wings 3, Predators 2, OT: At Nashville, Tennessee, Todd Bertuzzi scored in regulation and overtime for the second straight night to lift Detroit past Nashville.
Drew Miller also scored for Detroit. Legwand and Ryan Jones scored for Nashville.
On Friday night, Bertuzzi scored in regulation and overtime in Detroit’s 3-2 home win over Anaheim.
Kings 3, Stars 2, SO: At Los Angeles, Michal Handzus scored the deciding goal in the fourth round of a shootout as Los Angeles moved into a share of first place in the Western Conference.
Anze Kopitar and Alexander Frolov scored second-period goals for the Kings, tied with San Jose for the conference lead with 45 points.
Mike Modano and James Neal scored for Dallas.
Penguins 3, Panthers 2, OT: At Pittsburgh, Evgeni Malkin scored a power-play goal 37 seconds into overtime for Pittsburgh’s eighth win in its last 11 games.
Pascal Dupuis and Ruslan Fedotenko also scored for Pittsburgh, which has won all three games against the Panthers this season in overtime or a shootout by 3-2 scores.
Steven Reinprecht and Stephen Weiss scored for Florida.
Devils 4, Flyers 1: At Newark, New Jersey, Patrik Elias and Niclas Bergfors each scored twice and Martin Brodeur made 22 saves for New Jersey.
Brian Rolston and Travis Zajac each added two assists for the Devils, winners of eight of their last 10 games. Claude Giroux scored for Philadelphia. The Flyers have only two wins in their last 12 games.
Maple Leafs 6, Capitals 3: At Toronto, Matt Stajan had two goals and an assist and Toronto beat Washington, giving it three straight wins at home for the first time since January 2008.
Phil Kessel, Niklas Hagman, Lee Stempniak and Alexei Ponikarovsky also scored for Toronto, and Kessel had two assists.
Nicklas Backstrom scored twice, and Alex Ovechkin added a goal for Washington.
Thrashers 4, Canadiens 3, OT: At Atlanta, Ilya Kovalchuk scored a power-play goal at 1:18 of overtime, and Johan Hedberg stopped 16 shots to help Atlanta snap a three-game losing streak.
Christoph Schubert, Colby Armstrong and Nik Antropov scored for the Thrashers in regulation. Andrei Kostitsyn had two second-period goals for Montreal, and Glen Metropolit also scored.
Islanders 3, Bruins 2, OT: At Uniondale, New York, Frans Nielsen scored 24 seconds into overtime to snap New York’s losing streak at three games.
Matt Moulson had a goal and an assist for the Islanders, and Rob Schremp scored his first NHL goal. David Krejci and Michael Ryder scored for Boston.
Ducks 3, Blue Jackets 1: At Columbus, Ohio, Dan Sexton, Bobby Ryan and Corey Perry scored and Jonas Hiller stopped 35 shots to lead Anaheim.
R.J. Umberger scored for Columbus. The Blue Jackets have lost 10 of their last 12.
Coyotes 2, Sharks 1: At Glendale, Arizona, Ilya Bryzgalov stopped 37 shots, and Radim Vrbata and Robert Lang scored to help Phoenix extend San Jose’s losing streak to five games.
Dany Heatley scored for the Sharks.
Canucks 4, Wild 3: At Vancouver, British Columbia, Henrik Sedin set up first-period goals for twin brother Daniel Sedin, Mason Raymond and Alex Burrows as Vancouver edged Minnesota.
Ryan Kesler also scored, and Roberto Luongo made 38 saves.
Shane Hnidy, Greg Zanon and Martin Havlat scored for Minnesota.
Sabres 3, Rangers 2: At New York, tough guy Patrick Kaleta scored twice for Buffalo, including the tiebreaking goal in the second period.
Derek Roy also scored, and Ryan Miller made 36 saves. Ryan Callahan and Marian Gaborik had power-play goals for New York.
