ISLAMABAD: The Lahore High Court has granted bail to Interior Minister Rehman Malik in his long-running fraud case on Tuesday.
He had disputed two convictions against him, which had been decided after he had fled the country. One involved an alleged scam involving imported yellow cabs.
“Now I am before the court and in a position to defend myself,” he said. “I will prove my innocence before a court of law.”
Earlier, the High Court had dismissed an application from Malik to suspend his conviction. However, he was allowed to file a written petition under Article 199 of the Peoples’ Representatives Act.
Malik had fled the country after the verdict was announced against him in 2004. After his return in 2007, he sought refuge under the National Reconciliation Ordinance (NRO) and had not filed any appeal against his sentence in the last two years. When the cases reopened, he went to Lahore to fight them.
