JEDDAH: Gov. of Najran Prince Mishaal bin Abdullah on Saturday successfully negotiated peace between two tribes -- one Yemeni and the other Saudi -- which had been quarrelling with each other for over 30 years.
The dispute began 36 years ago after a Saudi tribesman died in a roadside bomb laid by the Yemeni tribe. The man who died was not the intended target and his tribe has been seeking revenge ever since.
Peace talks between tribal chiefs from both sides of the borders have been taking place for quite some time. The Yemeni side said the death was an accident and that the bomb had been placed for security reasons.
On hearing about the dispute, Prince Mishal began formulating a plan to bring the two sides to the table and made it possible for the Yemeni tribesmen to come to Najran.
Following a short negotiation, the Saudi tribe pardoned the Yemenis and closed the case, which had been left open for over 30 years. Twenty-two Yemeni tribesmen tribe took oaths that the bomb was not intended to kill the Saudi and offered the Saudis five Toyota Land Cruisers as a gift.
