JAKARTA: A major international Qur’an memorization competition, named after Crown Prince Sultan, began here on Sunday. As many as 115 contestants from Southeast Asian countries are taking part in the competition.
Dr. Ibrahim Al-Noghaimshi, religious attaché at the Saudi Embassy in Indonesia, opened the annual contest and commended Prince Sultan’s support to the program, which is aimed at spreading the message of Qur’an.
The competition has been organized by the Saudi Embassy in Jakarta in cooperation with the Indonesian Ministry of Religious Affairs. The contest will continue through Monday. Results will be announced the next day. In addition to Asian countries, contestants from Tajikistan, Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan are also taking part in the program.
Meanwhile, a Qur’an memorization contest for Prince Salman Award began in Jeddah on Sunday. Abdul Aziz Hanafi, chairman of the Charitable Society for Qur’an Memorization, said educational and military sectors in Jeddah are taking part in the contest. “It is organized to encourage young men and women to learn the Holy Qur’an and recite it properly,” he said.
