JEDDAH: The precautionary dam built to the east of Jeddah close to the Musk Lake will be emptied of all water within one month, said Ibrahim Kutubkhana, undersecretary for construction affairs, at the Jeddah municipality.
The level of water behind the dam, which in the past few months has gathered rain and floodwaters, reached 13.8 meters in height.
“There is not a single drop of untreated water or sewage behind the dam. The water behind the precautionary dam will be channeled to the southern water canal used to drain rainwater and a part of that canal passes through King Abdulaziz University,” said Kutubkhana.
He added that reports that the municipality has been dumping sewage water from the Musk Lake into the sea were untrue, adding that the construction of the Al-Samer Dam is almost complete.
He also said the municipality is currently working on filling potholes on the city’s roads following November’s floods. Work is presently ongoing on the Old Makkah Road from Kilo 4 to Kilo 14 areas. Work began last week and is expected to finish in three months, said Kutubkhana, adding that roads in the districts of Um Al-Khayr and Um Al-Salam would also be repaired.
He also said the municipality had repaired the service lane along the east of the King Abdulaziz University, along with Ba Khashab Street, Prince Miteb Road, King Abdul Aziz Road and Prince Majid Road.
“The municipality has laid some 1,350 square meters of asphalt and evened out about 250 square meters of road foundations,” said Kutubkhana, “We’ve also been continuing on with cleaning and removing dirt from Quwaizah.”
