DAMMAM: Police officers in Ahsa have arrested a Saudi youth who posed as an online matchmaker and cheated men and women looking for partners out of their money, Al-Madinah daily reported on Tuesday. Police investigated the 24-year-old after receiving a complaint from another Saudi who was looking for a woman to marry. The man said the conman charged SR15,000 but did not fulfill his side of the deal, a police source said.

QATIF: Doctors at a hospital in Qatif in the Eastern Province saved a Saudi woman who tried to commit suicide by overdosing on sleeping pills, Al-Madinah daily reported on Tuesday. According to a police spokesperson the woman was suffering from psychological disorders and had been prescribed the pills as part of her treatment.

JAZAN: Police in Jazan are looking for the parents of a newborn baby abandoned outside a village mosque on the outskirts of the town of Sabya, Al-Yaum newspaper reported on Tuesday. The muezzin found the child wrapped in warm clothes in a cardboard box near the gate of the mosque on his way to call for the dawn prayer on Monday. He alerted the village head who in turn contacted police. The baby is being cared for at a local hospital.

RIYADH: A police patrolman in Riyadh was killed in a road accident while pursuing suspected criminals on Monday, Al-Jazirah reported on Tuesday. Nawaf Al-Sharif ordered the men to stop when he identified them. Instead, the men tried to escape with Al-Sharif in pursuit. But he was involved in an accident and died from his injuries by the time he reached hospital. The other driver was arrested while the suspects escaped.
