Sextuplets joy for Italian woman
ROME: A 30-year-old Italian woman gave birth to four baby girls and two boys on Sunday, the largest multiple birth in Italy since 2003. The mother and babies all are in good health following the caesarian birth in the southern city of Benevento, near Naples, Italian news agencies reported. However, the children were born after just 29 weeks of pregnancy and weigh between 610 and 800 grams. All are on assisted breathing apparatus. Doctors said the multiple birth probably was due to fertility treatment taken by the woman, and not due to in vitro fertilization. Italian law prohibits more than three embryos to be transferred into the womb.
UK mothers not amused by ads
LONDON: A British advertising campaign aiming at provoking public discussion with billboard slogans that read “Career women make bad mothers” has gotten more attention than it asked for. The Outdoor Advertising Association has withdrawn the ads — placed on the sides of buses and thousands of billboards nationwide — after dozens of working mothers complained on Mumsnet, a prominent British online forum. An apology note from the campaign organizers said the ads were meant to demonstrate the power of outdoor advertising to drive viewers online.
5 militants killed in Russia’s south
MAKHACHKALA, Russia - Five militants have been killed in two separate incidents in the violence-plagued Russian province of Dagestan, officials said Sunday. Two militants were gunned down Sunday in the provincial capital, Makhachkala, after police surrounded and stormed a house where a group of wanted terrorists was hiding, regional Interior Ministry spokesman Mark Tolchinsky said. One of them was identified as a former riot police officer.
