Indian soldier killed in Kashmir
SRINAGAR: An Indian soldier was killed on Monday in cross-border firing in Kashmir, the latest in a spurt of violence in the disputed region that has raised tensions with Pakistan, officials said.
The incident comes two days after the nuclear-armed rivals exchanged accusation of cross-border firing to the south of Kashmir.
At least seven militants have been killed in separate gun battles in Indian Kashmir, and multiple infiltration attempts foiled by troops in the last week, police say.
Monday’s incident was the first time in six months that an Indian soldier has been killed in border firing.
Sulu probe into arms landing
ZAMBOANGA CITY, Philippines: Police are investigating reports of landing of hundreds of illegal weapons in the southern Philippine province of Sulu, where security forces are battling Abu Sayyaf militants.
Senior Superintendent Bienvenido Latag, the regional police chief, has ordered the investigation into the reports that some 300 firearms landed in the coastal town of Luuk.
Sulu Governor Sakur Tan, citing intelligence reports, said the weapons were smuggled into Luuk by a still unidentified armed group days after President Gloria Arroyo declared martial law in nearby Maguindanao province.
It is not clear if the weapons came from Maguindanao or who owns arms cache. Tan put Sulu under a state of emergency last year after militants kidnapped three Red Cross workers. He also ordered the dismantling of private armies in the province.
