JEDDAH: Police are investigating the suspected murder of a Bangladeshi who was stabbed during a fishing trip.
The unnamed victim was with three compatriots when they left Al-Rayes harbor before he was stabbed and later died due to his injuries in hospital on Thursday.
The four friends went out in the boat from the harbor, around 300 km north of Jeddah. When it returned the victim was heavily bleeding from a stab wound in the neck and another in the stomach.
Yet his three companions did not report the stabbing, which led to police suspecting murder. He was immediately taken to Badr hospital by Coast Guards where he died soon after. The head of public affairs for the Madinah region Coast Guards, Capt. Tale’a Al-Shehri, said the men had a fishing permit from harbor staff.
“They went fishing from the harbor but they did not report the incident involving their injured friends to Coast Guards until it was apparent to everyone that he was covered with blood,” he said. The three men have been taken to Badr police station for further questioning.
Sources have however revealed that during initial investigations the three suspects claimed their friend had tried to commit suicide because he was having personal problems.
They also said that they immediately made for shore to save him, the sources added. It is understood that officers still suspect foul play as the victim had suffered knife wounds in two different parts of his body. Investigations to establish cause of death are still ongoing.
