FRANKFURT: Kevin Kuranyi scored early in the second half to give Schalke a 1-0 win over Nuremberg on Sunday to keep his side second in the Bundesliga, while Borussia Dortmund secured a dramatic 3-2 win over Cologne with a stoppage-time winner.
Bayer Leverkusen beat Mainz 4-2 on Saturday to stay top on 38 points, while Schalke has 37.
In the late match, Borussia Dortmund threw away a two-goal lead late in the game in Cologne but Kevin Grosskreutz drilled in the winner from 16 meters (yards) in injury time to secure Dortmund’s fifth straight win.
Mats Hummels scored twice for Dortmund in the first half and the visiting team appeared to be cruising until two Cologne defenders struck late in the match.
Kevin McKenna headed in a free kick from Pierre Wome in the 82nd, then set up Youssef Mohamad for the equalizer in the 88th.
But Grosskreutz then produced the winner that strengthened Dortmund’s hold on fifth place.
Cologne is only one point above the relegation zone.
