John Edwards admits love child
WASHINGTON: One-time Democratic Party star and presidential hopeful John Edwards admitted for the first time Thursday he fathered a child from an affair during his White House run, as his wife battled cancer. Edwards, who was John Kerry’s running mate in his unsuccessful bid to unseat then-President George W. Bush in 2004, had up until now denied fathering the now two-year-old child with filmmaker Rielle Hunter. In a bombshell disclosure in August 2008, Edwards admitted publicly to his long-rumored affair. According to an NBC News/Wall Street Journal poll released last month, Americans consider Edwards to be the “most disappointing” public figure.
Straw: UK sought to avoid Iraq war
LONDON: Britain wanted to avoid the 2003 war in Iraq, its foreign secretary at the time said Thursday, saying that backing the conflict was “the most difficult decision I have ever faced in my life.” Jack Straw, the first serving Cabinet minister to give evidence to a public inquiry into the US-led conflict, said that so-called regime change was not Britain’s aim and said he made clear at the time that any use of force to depose Saddam under this objective would have been “improper” and “unlawful.”
